I had to drive over to York this Thursday morning to visit the passport office. I left Lancaster County on the East bank to York County on the West Bank over the usual mile long Rt. 30 bridge but decided to return home via Market Street over the old Wrightsville to Columbia Bridge. Just below this bridge are the piers of the bridge that was burnt down by Union troops in June 1863 during the Civil War to prevent General Lee's Confederate Army from crossing the Susquehanna to attack Harrisburg, Lancaster and even Philadelphia. This eventually led up to the Battle of Gettysburg which became the turning point in the Civil War.
Wrightsville Bridge
Just North of Columbia is the Breezyview Overlook. Years ago when I worked in Lancaster and Kelly worked in York we would sometimes meet at the Overlook for a lunch. After finding a 6ft long Black Rat Snake in the grass I think we stopped meeting there for some reason.
Carrying on a little further is a trailhead to the 525ft high Chiques Rock (Chickies) because people can't figure out how to spell Chiques. The name is derived from the American Indian word 'Chiquesalunga' meaning place of the crayfish. Just back down the road towards York is the village of Hellam but because it upsets the sensibilities of some obviously good Christian residents it's now mostly called Hallam. Dumbass morons in my opinion.
Anyway, dumbass shit for brains morons aside I had a nice drive back home.
